Change in flight
« on: January 10, 2008, 02:27:42 AM »

I was thinking it would be nice to able to change the target and actions of a group while in transit.  This would allow for some greater variety of tactics.  For example, I could send a fleet out initially to defend a buddy, but at the last tick turn it to attack another in that galaxy.  so it would be a surprise attack.

This has been suggested before I think. For defending it would be great but if used for attacks my problem is this:
If you wait till the last minute and then switch, the person you are attacking gets no warning that you are coming. I think the defender should have at least some chance.

There would need to be some sort of penalty involved with using it.

Code743,
that is exactly the point, to provide no warning.  it require people to rethink their strategies and forces them to pay more attention to what is going on in the game.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. It would create new tactical possibilities; but I sorta agree with Ryu that there should be some penalty for the target switch, maybe an extra tick of travel so the target has at least that much warning.

A smaller change I'd like: to be able to launch two groups at same planet (same tick or staggered launches). So you could bring a (cancellable) decoy group just to scare defenders before landing, or you could maneuver between two (fixed but "selectable") ETAs with two same-size groups... I dont' really get why it's impossible now -- has it been available and problematic in the past?

i think it would be ok if the eta would reset to what it would be

(if your eta is 3 to a planet, even though your fleet has been going to a different planet for 2 hours, it will still take 3 hours anyway)

cause really, who is to say that you would be going directly in a line to the planet you want to sneak attack?

Resetting the ETA would be good, you'd still save the return trip time (compared to now) yet there would be sufficient warning.

Another but closely related thing: I'd like to be able to switch between Attack and Defend in flight, maybe for a 1 tick "reorganizing" penalty. (Albeit such a "penalty" could be a real boon in some situations when used right, so it's a bit iffy.)

So if defense looks hopeless, you can grab rocks into safety (or backstab a mate). More psychological pressure onto planet owner in break-even situations... Also less of those funny looking defense launches at attackers in a hurry...

BTW, never tried -- can you attack ally mates? Or is that "divebombing" which seems to require not being in same ally (that is, quitting first)? (BTW, as an aside, was it the famous UGF defense strategy, always herding rocks to safety?)

you cannot attack alliance members

and we used to have the change attack/defense in flight, but everyone just sent defensive fleets, defended for 1 tick, and switched to attack, it just got rediculous

Okay, switching from Def to Att is tested and rejected, and switching the target mid-flight probably breaks the game.

What do you think about being able to launch two grops at same planet as I asked above?

nope, not as of now

and i dont really see why not (except im sure someone will come up with a reason)

that could add to a whole bunch of strategy
