ETA system related to new ships
« on: October 02, 2007, 10:59:25 PM »

now i am relatively new to this game, but i think i understand why everybody is griping about the ETA system.
Now, i'm just throwing this out here, but what if different ships had different speeds? that way, people with a GIGANTIC amount of rocks won't just keep on cranking out Lurkers and whatnot won't have a humongous advantage over the rest of us Joes.

Anyway, I'm a noob to this game so my opinion probably doesn't matter, I'm just throwing this out there.

Tell me what you think...

everyone is entitled to their own opinion,( but your is wrong :))

the reason being that if you tried to send out a fleet of lurkers and punishers, the punishers would get there first.

and then no one would build like any lurkers at all, it would be 100% punishers or hawks instead of 75 or 80%

I'm not saying that speed equals power, quite the contrary actually. i'm saying that if different units had different speeds, instead of just focusing on just how much explosive ordinance your fleet was capable of, you could actually focus more on getting there quicker. Also, the faster the unit, the higher the price, just like the more destructive units. Granted, a player could make an entire fleet of the fastest unit, but when he attacks someone else whose defense fleet is composed of the slower-yet-more-powerful units, odds are they'll get creamed.

But that's just my opinion.

But if you make a group that has all different kinds of units, then the whole group has to travel as fast as the slowest unit to prevent your group from "spreading itself too thin."

Units of different speeds would allow a massive fleet of say, 500k of each unit to almost continually divebomb a planet for 8-12 ticks straight? It's either overpowered by a sense of time or underpowered by a sense of spreading your units out over a large area and leaving yourself vulnerable.

That would be a cool tactic lol!!
Esp if you co-ordinate, you could possibly be bombarding someone for 24 hours straight!!
Going back in the thread though, it's not a bad idea having something like a faster ship to counter the higher ETA's, would be useful if defending someone else in your alliance...

Its actually a good idea (and one that's sucessful in a lot of other games). But... I don't think the current CW combat system, will make it meaningful.

A combat system like Abd/PA/SS (for those who are familiar with them), would make more sense for different ETAs, as there MANY ways to balance out stats (instead of just power like in CW).

Then again, it could work, but you'd have to make the low ETA ships far less efficient, so people have a reason not to make them (i.e. a strategic choice).

The entire purpose of this was just to suggest the possiblility, I'm not saying that this exact idea should be implemented, I was just trying throw a new idea out there. That's all.

the thing is that there would be no point in building the slower ships, cause they will either A. slow you down
or b. have staggered times

which could be used in good ways, but would slow down the everyday attack

And what if the slower ships were far more efficient than the faster ones?

then everyone would build the slower ships

the point is there would be no point in sending both in the same group, cause they would either be staggered or slowed down

plus, can you say bugs?

i dont quite understand this thread

if you want your slow ships and fast ships to travel seperately why not put them in 2 seperate groups? :/

did you ever played StarSphere, it's eta system i just like backlash's idea
fast ships = crap - meduim power
slows ships=meduim- overpowered

"then everyone would build the slower ships"
in SS you had a ship called the vulture, it had crappy attack power, still people made them!
