there should be a tab to idle the other fleets cause now when they copy the home fleet u have to set them to return and launch to idle them

if you choose to return and launch does your fleet arrive in 0 ticks?

ah, right. well moving units around and idling your home can i'm sure help.

but in principle i don't see why it would be a problem for all your fleets at home to always take their orders from the home fleet's status.

Is there a good reason?

Is there a good reason?

Not having your entire armada wasted when you can't get online?

Say, you have most of your ships returning from a battle, and some in Home defending against a small incoming attack, and you have to go away. You want the returning fleet to be safely idling whenever you get back online, not smashed to pieces because they mirrored Home's status. The old idea of "ships in groups are safe". (But should you deliberately want more carnage in the game, then keep it simple and take away all idling altogether.)

If you want to keep this sort of autopilot system available, is it a big job/complication to add an option to override it?

Yeah sometimes you just want to defend against small attacks, so you leave some ships home defending. If you have all ships defending you may wake up with no ships.

thanks guys, you're correct, i wasn't looking at it from that point of view...

Encouraging carnage would be nice, but not at the expense of activity.

Though i'd like to encourage activity aswell, i'm not sure how best to do so.

ANYWAY, for now if you keep one fleet at home defending, with units in it, and your home fleet idle your returning ships will be safe.

I know this is at the cost of an entire fleet, but until i can come up with a better solution (actauly anyone coming up with a better solution would be fine) that's how it's going to be.

EDIT: also please note: with the new rock capturing limits you will expect raids to be bigger.

So this changes how much you want to defend with. AND of course the more you defend with the less rocks you lose (that was a rock capture change from last round) again encouraging bigger defences. So I hope some of these changes will actually alter things tactically to make a more interesting game.

Good points, I forgot that both defense and offense strengths affect capturing in the current system... small lucky raids are a thing of the past (or at least don't matter much all for your pop if they get through) so you won't have need for a small defense so often. Unless you just want to smash things. :P

Then, having to dedicate a real fleet for defense probably only matters in the early stages when you need to send recons for lack of scanning. Later on it gets uncommon to have all three flying same time; or you might gang defend an ally mate (with your "defense allocation") as often as your own planet -- better have those ships in a fleet anyway.

Maybe it works okay as it is now. The global news reminder in-game was a nice touch. Updating the (Fleets) Help page would be good too.

I begun thinking of an idle/defend "default action" selector for every fleet (like Home has) but that would be extra buttons to an already busy interface, and not really worth the fuss.

updating all the help would be nice.

i think i'll get around to doing away with wiki as a way of putting help files in... oh wait, what happened to that manual Overmind was writing?
